Tulsa Area United Way reached it's goal again in
1996!

$18 Million! |
It's been a tradition in Tulsa for some of the downtown buildings to
light their office lights to spell the number of the United Way goal when it's achieved
each year. I was assigned to take photos of those buildings in 1996, but it was so
foggy and rainy that you couldn't see the downtown office buildings from more than
a few feet away. There are tall office buildings in the blank areas behind and
between the two buildings you can see here. As I was looking around the city
for a photo op I found this spotlighted building highlighting a banner which had
"$18,000,000" written on it. I LOVED the laser-look of the spotlight
through the fog! I wandered around the site until I found this composition, using
the truck and the spotlight itself to frame the building.
Yes, the photo has been "manipulated". There's no way
that the print film I was shooting could record the downtown scene as you see it and the
actual writing on the banner itself at the same time. The banner writing was totally
washed out by the amount of light that hit it during the long exposure necessary to record
the rest of the scene. So...the "$18,000,000" was laser-printed onto the
actual print itself! I think the resulting print looks dramatic and gets the point
across at the same time.
